Join Roche, where every voice matters. The PositionA healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes usIn Roche’s , we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed. We are offering a unique opportunity to join our team at the Roche Innovation Center Basel. This position is located in Lead Discovery (LD), a department within the Therapeutic Modalities function (TMo), where the discovery of chemical starting points for further optimization in medicinal chemistry is a primary focus. We closely collaborate with our therapeutic areas and functions to convert hypotheses into innovative therapeutics. The OpportunityWe are seeking a committed and seasoned Associate for the Protein Sciences Group. This group is in charge of recombinant protein production for research purposes, from construct design and cloning to expression and purification. In addition and in close collaboration with the biochemistry and biophysics team in LD, the group characterizes proteins by means of a broad array of methods and closely interacts with the structural biology team to determine structures by X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. The focus for internal activities is on complex target proteins, while we use an established network of CROs to produce standard proteins. You are working on Protein Science aspects throughout the entire process from gene to protein. As an individual contributor in a matrix organization, you spend the majority of your time in the lab while coordinating projects with colleagues from neighbouring teams as well as external partners. You scout new ways of improving protein expression and are proficient in all major protein purification as well as protein quality control techniques. You work in close collaboration with assay developers, screeners and biophysicists to establish robust assays to ensure the quality of target proteins and with structural biologists to provide suitable reagents for structure determination using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.You use your aptitude for automation, data handling and analysis as well as integrated workflows to improve existing solutions for high-throughput expression screening and protein purification and explore new ways of increasing the impact of the protein science team within the organisation.Who you areYou are an associate with experience or a recent university graduate in life sciences with extensive knowledge in state-of-the-art recombinant protein expression systems, expression yields optimisation and accompanying cell culture techniques. As a dedicated individual with a focus on wet lab work and hands-on experience in using different expression systems (bacterial, insect, and mammalian systems) ideally in a parallelized and automated way, you can handle large sets of data and an interest in data analysis. You have knowledge of all major protein purification methodologies as well as protein-based experimental methods and a background in cell line generation and engineering is a plus. You use your efficient communication skills and your aptitude for continuous learning to seek solutions with a sense of urgency and drive projects forward.Who we areAt Roche, more than 100,000 people across 100 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare.
