Offer DescriptionYour responsibilitiesWe are looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering Department ( ). You will join the EN-EL-EPM section to work on Research Facility 2.0 (RF 2.0), a European Project in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The scope of the project is to set guidelines for the design of future sustainable particle accelerators: CERN's contribution focus on the electrical network supplying the facilities.First, an analysis on the existing CERN's electrical network will be performed, and will contribute to the next stages of the project: the preparation of its digital twin by KIT and the assessment of the benefits of new technologies (energy storage, renewable power generation, FACTS) through real time simulations. The selected candidate will join the project team, composed by members of CERN, KIT and other stakeholders, and will contribute to the successful completion of the above-mentioned scope.List of the main tasks:
  • Acquire a deep understanding of the scope of the project and of CERN's electrical network
  • Contribute to the survey of new technologies that could be deployed in the network
  • Perform studies and simulations (EMT and RMS ) integrating the new technologies, to have an evaluation of the benefits
  • Participate in site surveys
  • Contribute to the studies, the technical coordination and the onsite activities for the installation of more than 20 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in CERN's network
  • Perform analysis on the data available from the PMUs, building reports and dashboards on the Power Quality of the network
  • Ensure the delivery of all the relevant information to KIT for the development of the digital twin of the network
  • Follow up the activity of KIT on the digital twin to ensure a prompt alignment of needs and objectives
  • Contribute to the tests and simulations that will happen on the digital twin at the latest stages of the project
  • Prepare technical specifications to describe the requirements of the project
